On January 15, 2026, Gulf of Sidra University successfully hosted an online dissemination conference within the framework of the HGRA Project, bringing together academics, researchers, and policymakers to discuss the role of migration research in addressing contemporary challenges.
The conference opened with welcome remarks from Prof. Ibrahim Gaidan, President of Gulf of Sidra University, and Marcello Scalisi, Director of UNIMED. Jibriel Abusaleem, Director of the International Cooperation Office at GSU, introduced the conference theme, presented the agenda, and provided an overview of the HGRA Project and its key results.
Keynote speeches addressed critical dimensions of migration research and decision-making such as the role of migration research in informing policy decisions, outlining both opportunities and challenges.
The program continued with thematic sessions covering current migration trends, the socio-economic impact of irregular migration, international migration policies, and future directions for strengthening research capacities in universities. Speakers from Gulf of Sidra University and other Libyan higher education institutions shared insights and best practices, emphasizing the importance of research support structures and interdisciplinary collaboration.
The event concluded with an open discussion session, allowing participants to engage directly with speakers, followed by a closing session summarizing key takeaways and outlining next steps and a call to action.
